“Nice State Park, Near the City!”
Bird Creek Campground
Bird Creek Campground is located halfway between Anchorage and Girdwood in the Chugach State Park. The campground offers wooded sites with fire rings and picnic tables, water, and clean vault toilets, walking/biking trail, and hiking. We didn’t use the water as we weren’t sure if it needed boiling first. We have seen other state park campgrounds that required boiling of the well water prior to use.
Nice Campsites
Some of the sites are large enough to fit big rigs (we are 38 feet long) and semi-private with all the trees that also help muffle the noise. Bird Creek Campground offers 28 sites, tent camping and max stay 7 days at a time.
Across the highway from Bird Creek campground are 30 additional sites in the overflow parking lot for $20.00 a night up to 7 nights. We stayed here a couple of nights while passing through the area.
Our biggest complaint was the highway noise, although it didn’t keep us from staying at Bird Creek campground more than once when passing through the area. The campground sits between the railroad tracks and the highway. The train often comes multiple times a day but not through the nighttime. This is a popular campground with fishermen and families alike.
Walking Trial Down by the River
Bird Creek offers a nice walking trail that takes you right down to the river where you can fish for salmon, when in season. The water is a beautiful greenish-blue and very cold. The trail offers views of the Turnagain Arm along the railway. There were wildfires in the area so we had a limited view of the mountains during our visit.
Would we stay again?
We would definitely stay at Bird Creek Campground again when we visit the Anchorage, Alaska area. It is close to the city, approximately 25 miles to grocery stores and other big box stores, for shopping.
