Lake Vermillion Recreation Area
Lake Vermillion Recreation Area is known for its clear waters and abundant fish, it is a popular area among fishermen, boaters, and swimmers in the summer and fall. This campground is open year-round. This 512-acre reservoir is located 27 miles west of Sioux Falls.
Interesting Fun Facts
- The word vermillion means vivid red color. Some say the stream got its name from the outcropping of red quartzite along its bank.
- Lake Vermillion was created by impounding waters from the east fork of the Vermillion River in 1958. The river itself was first noted on an 1801 map by a French trapper who called it Otter Stream. – Source
Amenities/Activities
There are 3 campgrounds with 94 campsites with amenities that include fire pits, drinking water, electric, and no electric sites and a dump station. There are also vault and flushing toilets. Showers are available within the rec area.
There are many activities at the Lake Vermillion Recreation Area, it was very cold when we were there so a summer visit would be fun since there is a beach, a boat ramp, paddleboard rentals, picnic tables playgrounds, and a ski beach.

Would we stay again?
We would definitely love to visit again in the summertime when it is a little warmer out so we could enjoy getting our paddleboats out, swim, take walks and just enjoy the outdoors. This campground was very clean and quiet with large campsites.
