“Beautiful camping just outside of White Sands National Monument thanks to the USAF!!”

Holloman Lake-New Mexico

Lake Holloman

We loved this spot just down the street from White Sands National Monument. Thanks to the United States Air Force and the Holloman AFB Commander for allowing free camping here.

Although the lake was awesome, the sunset was absolutely amazing and the cell coverage allowed us to work without interruption there are a couple of nuances I feel compelled to point out.

The Smell

The lake is quite stagnate and can have a bit of an odor so if you are at all hypersensitive you may need a plan B. It wasn’t bad at all when we visited but be aware. Also, no swimming and the “beach” was pretty heavily covered with little gnats even though they didn’t bother us at all at our RV.

Access

If you’re heading SW from Alamogordo you may need to go past the entrance about a quarter of a mile turn around heading back NE then turn into the entrance crossing the divided highway.

Our fiver is 38 ft long and we made our first attempt at the entrance heading SW. The issue is that the gate is very narrow and we couldn’t enter without taking out the gatepost. Once we went further down the highway and came in from the other direction we had a straight shot into the gate without any issues.

Short of those two things we really did love this location. We even met new friends from the great white north and their 3-year-old daughter, Olive, loved playing with our Great Dane Maggie.

Would We Stay Again?

White Sands is incredibly beautiful. We will definitely stay at Holloman Lake on our next visit in the near future.

Nightly Cost: FREE
Max Stay:  14 Days
Hookups: Dry Camping
Pets: Allowed

WIFI: Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile 4G LTE signals were strong so connectivity was awesome. Our weBoost cell booster was on standby just in case the signal strength wasn’t strong enough but was not needed.

We stopped at a pretty awesome City Park overnight in Abilene, TX before making our way to New Mexico to visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park for a week, then onto White Sands National Monument in Alamogordo, New Mexico! Last time we visited was in […]
