Journey to Alaska Episode 14 | Riverboat Discovery | Fairbanks AK
Riverboat Discovery
We decided to experience the Riverboat Discovery tour while in Fairbanks and we’re so glad we did. We learned so much about the Alaskan culture and really enjoyed it.
It was a nice way to learn about the history of the Chena River and those that call it home. The guides do an excellent job of telling the history of the river and its people.
We visited a Chena Village and learned about the history of the Athabascan Indians. Local Indian girls were our guides telling the story of their village life and ancestors. They even have live caribou in the village
What was really cool was the floatplane demonstration. The pilot landed right beside the riverboat. He also shared stories of village life and explained how these floatplanes are vital to life in Alaska.
There’s so much more on this riverboat tour including a dog sled demonstration from the Susan Butcher Kennels. She’s the late four-time Iditarod champion and her home is right on the river.
If you ever find yourself in Fairbanks we highly recommend the Riverboat Discovery tour on the Chena River.
Midnight Sun Run 2019
We survived our first 10k! When we signed up for the Midnight Sun Run I don’t think we really paid attention to the distance, we just knew we had to do this when in Alaska! I have to say this 10k was so much fun!!
Fairbanks knows how to put on a block party that lasted 6.2 miles winding through neighborhoods. Everyone was partying and cheering the runners/walkers on!! People dressed up in costumes, even T-Rex had fun! Check the video for a good laugh!
If you enjoy races put this one on your bucket list because it is so much fun! The run included 3,500 people from 47 states and 13 countries and everyone seemed to have a great time!
The sunset was pretty incredible at the end of the race, 12:00 AM June 21, 2019. We would do this race again and if you are a runner, add this to your bucket list.
