Utah’s Red Hollow Trail
✔️About this Episode:
Join us in this episode where we discovered a hidden gem just outside Zion National Park. Utah’s beautiful Red Hollow Slot Canyon. Plus see why we were DENIED access to Zion National Park.
Off the Beaten Path
Utah’s Red Hollow Trail is a nice beginner hike just outside of Zion National Park’s eastern entrance. Ever hear of Orderville, Utah? It’s a tiny town east of Zion on Highway 89. We have driven through Orderville many times, but never knew it had hidden beauty off the beaten path.
Short and Sweet Hike
Utah’s Red Hollow Trail is a 1.5 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail. Dogs are also able to use this trail but should be kept on a leash. Some spots are a little harder for your dog to navigate, take caution you might have to help them over some rocks.
We only went as far as the ropes since the ropes looked a little weathered and not safe to use, plus Maggie wouldn’t have been able to go that far. If you aren’t into climbing (we are not that skilled) this is where you would turn back and take the same way out of the canyon.
We aren’t experienced hikers so this was a nice and easy hike for us that we were able to take Maggie on. We are also not climbers so we skipped that part for a nice packed lunch on a big rock enjoying the views. There was only one other family so late March is a perfect time to enjoy the hike without the crowds.
Directions
Orderville is not known for labeling its streets so here’s a tip on finding the trailhead. Coming north on highway 89 you’ll make a right on road 100E…which isn’t marked but is the same road as the high school and cemetery. Follow to the T and make a left…the road will curve right.
Follow just a few hundred feet and at the next curve is where you can park OR if you have a 4×4 (something that can handle some deep sand) then continue on the sandy, unpaved road toward the water tower and park there. Hike the trail down and turn left…continue straight up the big wash (to the left) toward the red cliffs. The trail will dead end at the slots. ~Alltrails.com
