RV Lithium Battery Upgrade Part 1 – RELiON Batteries
We’ve been anticipating this upgrade for almost as long as we’ve been fulltime RVing. It’s been a long 2-year wait but thanks to the folks over at RELiON Batteries we’re finally making it happen.
That’s right! Our fifth wheel “Freedom” is getting a very well-deserved Christmas present, 600-amp hours of new LiFePO4 Lithium batteries from RELiON.
We installed 4 new Trojan T-105 Deep Cycle, 6 Volt, Lead Acid batteries 2 years ago just before we hit the road. These batteries have worked very well for us and we’ve been pleased with them. However, and here’s the rub, they just don’t perform well enough for our boondocking travel style.

Battery Anxiety?
Yes, they keep the lights on and have enabled us to boondock wherever we’ve wanted. I mean, these 4 deep cycle batteries offer 440 Amp Hours of power (220 Amp Hours useable) which isn’t anything to sneeze at. Problem is they discharge too quickly and take forever to charge.
I heard someone coin the phrase “battery anxiety” and its true. With the lead-acid batteries, I am constantly checking the % full, can’t take them below 50% or permanent damage will occur, and dragging the generator out only to run it for 7 or 8 hours to get a full charge.
Even with our 800 Watts of solar panels the lead-acid batteries simply take too long to charge fully. And, another rub, if you don’t charge them fully, I mean if you leave them partially charged, additional damage will occur and shorten their lifespan even further.
In walks Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery technology from RELiON Batteries and everyone smiles?
This new LiFePO4 Lithium technology is almost unbelievable. You can discharge them to zero % if you so desire without damaging them. Meaning, of the 600 Amp Hours they offer we can use 600 Amp Hours, WE CAN USE ALL OF IT. How freakin’ amazing is that?
They re-charge in 1 to 3 hours. You can leave them partially charged and not cause battery damage. You don’t have to add water and check the condition of the electrolyte, there is no electrolyte in the LiFePO4 battery LOL, and the list goes on and on.
Sure, they cost more upfront but you truly get what you pay for. If you factor in replacing your lead-acid batteries every 2 years, because they probably won’t last much longer than that even with the best care anyway, Lithium batteries are actually cheaper than lead acids and can last up to 20 years. AMAZING!
