“Nice Campground near the Glacier”

Matanuska State Rec Area

Matanuska State Rec Area

Matanuska State Rec Area has a nice little campground near the Matanuska Glacier. While it was a little snug for larger rigs like ours, we are 38′ long but we were able to snag one of the last sites. The campground is near the Matanuska Glacier off Glenn Highway Scenic Byway at milepost 101.

Amenities

Vault bathrooms, picnic tables, and fire pits but no hookups are available.  However, if the campground if full there is a large parking area you can camp overnight for $10 right near the scenic overlook. There is no access is provided to the glacier from the recreation site.

We were able to work here with limited AT&T. Although, slow it was available.

The Matanuska State Rec Area has 12 campsites on a gravel loop road. There is a nice walking trail that begins at the rest area and provides a 20-minute walk through the forest to glacier viewing platforms. Although we weren’t really able to see the glacier due to heavy smoke in the area from the summer wildfires.

Would we stay again?

We would definitely stay at Matanuska State Rec Area again if we were in that area, it is a little out of the way and not near bigger cities, so stock up before leaving the city. We stayed free for 3 days with our disabled veterans pass from the state of Alaska.
